Philippine Eye Research Institute

The Institute has the following functions:

a) to conduct clinical, applied and epidemiological investigations of eye diseases;
b) to design and execute fundamental and basic studies and experiments on ocular conditions and pathology;
c) to support the research functions of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the University of the Philippines;
d) to collaborate with scientific researches in other fields of medicine;
e) to provide stimulation and assistance for ophthalmic research in the Philippines;
f) to collaborate with scientific research activities locally and internationally;
g) to formulate plans, activities, and proposals, and to recommend for adoption by the Board of Regents such policies, procedures, rules and regulations consistent with the effective operation of the Institute, as it shall deem necessary and reasonable; and
h) to recommend, based on research evidence, policies to national agencies that will redound to the health benefit of the Filipino people.

Description: A training course offered to school health personnel on vision screening

2. San Beda University College of Medicine Ophthalmology Elective Course
Description: An elective course taken by 3rd-year medical students on Ophthalmology research

3. Philippine Science High School System Science Immersion Program
Description: An immersion offered to students enrolled in the Philippine Science High School System to engage the students in current Ophthalmology research

4. Primary Eye Care Training
Description: Training for the implementation of policies and guidelines for community eye health systems

1. National Vision Screening Program
Description: Coordination with DepEd and DOH on the implementation of Republic Act No. 11358

2. Department of Health (DOH) Prevention of Blindness Program
Description: Provision of consultancy on the research aspect for the implementation of policies and guidelines of the DOH Prevention of Blindness Program and National Eye Health Program

3. UP Manila Doctor of Optometry Program - Part of the Technical Working Group
Description: Provision of consultancy and guidance on the implementation of the Doctor of Optometry Program in UP Manila

4. Eye Research Collaboration with Technological University of the Philippines
Description: Consultancy on Eye Research to the Technological University of the Philippines

5. Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science Research Support
Description: Technical and Resource support for Research Projects of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of the Philippines

Description: Regulatory, Resource, and Technical Support for Ocular Clinical Trials conducted in the Philippines
