PhD in Health Sciences (by Research)
This PhD program is focused on the scientific investigation and knowledge discovery, centered on independent study, sustained and skilled research effort and scientific publication. It is designed to be more flexible and enabling, in contrast to the regular PhD courses. It is also interdisciplinary in nature and cuts across the different expertise in the health sciences.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of the program, the graduate is expected to have the following knowledge, skills, and attitudes:
- apply advanced knowledge, research skills and scholarship to deepen understanding of the basis of physiological phenomena and its perturbations;
- generate new knowledge or discover new insights by engaging in and conducting original research in the health sciences;
- demonstrate communication skills, competence and independence that are marks of one’s leadership in the research study area of specialization; and
- integrate professionalism, ethics and a sense of responsibility in the development of a research culture in the health sciences.
Admission Requirements
| Academic Qualifications: | Be a Master's degree holder in a related field, from a recognized institution, or be a holder of a Doctor of Medicine, with specialization |
| Research Experience: | Show research experience beyond the Master's or equivalent degree, manifested as having been a co-author in at least 3 published papers* and a lead/first author of at least 1 published paper* in the intended or related area of specialization in reputable refereed journals in the recent 5 years *Note: These publications should reflect broad and deep knowledge and experience in various research methodologies. These papers should be published in reputable, refereed journals. |
| Research Proposal: | Submit a capsule research proposal. The proposal should explicitly show which research study area the student intends to pursue. It should also present a general knowledge and comprehension of the problem and gauge the student's experience. |
| Personal Statement: | Submit a personal statement indicating his/her mission, vision, and motivation and purpose in pursuing the degree. |
| Documentary Requirements: | A duly accomplished application form must be submitted to the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences (NGOHS) together with the following documents: ⠀⠀• Reprints or copies of the applicant's publications as required above; ⠀⠀• Official transcript of previous academic study and a photocopy of the masters' or MD diploma, and proof of specialization for MD applicants; and ⠀⠀• Research proposal, not exceeding five pages, which shall include the title, research study area, statement of the problem, rationale and significance, research objectives, general methodology and analysis to be conducted, and references. The proposal is submitted to the NGOHS who will constitute a committee under the research study area and decide on the qualifications and potential of the student to undertake the PhD by research. The Committee will then assign the research supervisor, to whom the student will report for the rest of his/her residency as student in the program. |
| Language Proficiency: | All applicants from countries where English is not the medium of instruction should present an IELTS or TOEFL certification per requirements set by the NGOHS / University. |

| Course Requirements: | ⠀⠀• Attendance in 1 national or 1 international conference ⠀⠀• Completion of 1 training workshop/ training course related to the research topics he/she will pursue. It is preferred that the training/rotation be conducted in highly published laboratory or setting, locally or internationally. ⠀⠀• Lead/first author of a proof-of-concept research paper that must be presented in any of the conferences and submitted for publication in a refereed journal ⠀⠀• Dissertation proposal and candidacy examination *Note: The final proposal is a more refined version of the entry proposal submitted for admission and done in consultation with the research supervisor/ adviser and co-adviser.* |
