PhD in Health Sciences (by Publication)

The PhD by Publication in the Health Sciences is a research degree intended for mid- career academics who have contributed a sizable amount of new knowledge in their respective fields in the health sciences. These academics, while pursuing various careers, have continued to pursue research vigorously and are recognized in the research area they have specialized. They have published in both international and local indexed scientific literature.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of the program, the graduate is expected to:

  1. lead in the generation of new knowledge or discovery of new Insights in the research area of specialization;
  2. transform research outputs into policies and inventions that will impact on the state of health and well-being of the people and the nation; and
  3. integrate professionalism, ethics, and a sense of responsibility in the development of a research culture in the health sciences.

Admission Requirements

  1. Be a Master's degree holder in a health-related field, from a recognized institution; or be a holder of a Doctor of Medicine, with specialization (at least completed a residency training)
  2. Show extensive research experience and consistent research productivity, within a pre-specified health-related area of specialization
  3. Show evidence of high level of recognition by the scientific community as a leader in the pre-specified health-related area of specialization
  4. Submit an outline of the dissertation. For this PhD programme, the dissertation is an integration of at least 4 interrelated research publications where he/she is an author with significant contribution to the work
  5. Submit a duly accomplished application form to the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences (NGOHS) together with the following documents:

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀a. Reprints or copies of the applicant's publications as required above;
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀b.Official transcript of previous academic study and a certified true copy of the masters' or MD diploma, and proof of specialization for MD applicants;
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀c.Outline of the dissertation; and
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀d.IELTS or TOEFL certification for all applicants from countries where English is not the medium of instruction, as per requirements set by the NGOHS of UP Manila.

Grade Requirements

  1. Submission of a portfolio of scientific publications that have been incorporated into the dissertation (see item 2)
  2. Submission of the dissertation integrating at least 4 scientific papers, published in a peer-reviewed, ISI or Scopus-indexed journal in the recent 10 years; reckoning from the date of application, and where the student is an author with significant contribution to the works
  3. Successful defense of the dissertation
  4. Publication or acceptance for publication of the dissertation, or an integral part of it, in a peer-reviewed, ISI or Scopus-indexed journal
