Master of Arts in Health Professions Education (Academic Track)

The Master of Arts in Health Professions Education (MAHPEd) [Academic Track] is geared toward developing health professions educational designers, facilitators, evaluators, leaders, and researchers. The program comprises 17 units of core courses, 7 units of elective courses, and 6 units of master’s thesis. It equips graduates with a deep understanding of theoretical concepts, and research and scholarly writing skills to produce new knowledge for the advancement of HPEd as an academic discipline. It may be taken as a terminal degree or as preparation for a doctoral degree program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Arts in Health Professions Education (MAHPEd) [Academic Track] are expected to:

  1. communicate effectively in written and oral form about matters pertaining to health professions education (HPEd);
  2. demonstrate professionalism, cultural competence, and the ability to collaborate with other health professionals;
  3. exhibit nationalism and internationalism in the practice of the teaching professions;
  4. develop context-based macro- and micro-plans for HPEd;
  5. demonstrate advance teaching skills based on best evidence;
  6. evaluate educational programs and studies;
  7. demonstrate effective educational leadership abilities and administrative skills; and
  8. conduct relevant research in the production of new, relevant, and up-to-date information in Education for Health Professions

Admission Requirements

  1. A 4-year baccalaureate degree in health profession from the University of the Philippines or other approved university or tertiary institution considered acceptable by UPM
  2. Teaching and/or administrative experience or at least two years in an institution responsible for the teaching of health personnel
  3. Good scholastic record from any recognized institution of higher learning
  4. For all applicants from countries where English is not the medium of instruction: Certificate from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (i.e., Band 6) OR Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (i.e., at least 550 for written test, 173 for computerized test, and 70 for internet-based test)
  5. Duly accomplished application forms (available for download at http://ngohs.upm.edu.ph/) with the minimum National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences (NGOHS) requirements

Graduation Requirements

  1. At least one full academic year of residency immediately preceding the awarding of a degree
  2. Completion of at least 30 formal course units
  3. Satisfactory completion and submission of the required hard bound copies of thesis, and electronic copy of the manuscript
  4. A GWA of 2.00 or higher in all major courses and all courses are taken, assuming that none of these courses have a grade of 5.00
