====== Academic Standards and Information ====== ===== General Policies ===== == Academic Calendar == The general framework of the UPM Academic Calendar is approved by the Executive Committee, the details of which are prepared by the University Registrar subject to the approval of the Chancellor and the UP President. \\ \\ The Academic Year is divided into two semesters. Each semester is composed of at least 16 weeks or 100 class days, exclusive of registration and final examination periods.\\ \\ In line with efforts to develop UP as a regional and global university, the Board of Regents approved on a pilot basis, the shift in the academic calendar starting Academic Year 2014-2015, from June-October to August-December for the First Semester, from November-March to January-May for the Second Semester, and from April-May to June-July for the Short Term.\\ \\ All degree-granting units offer courses on a semestral basis, except for the College of Public Health for its graduate programs and the School of Health Sciences for its ladderized program which is offered on a quarterly scheme.\\ \\ The following terminologies shall be used to refer to the term and academic year.\\ \\ ^ Expanded ^ Shortened ^ | First Semester/Trimester | 1S / 1T | | Second Semester/Trimester | 2S / 2T | | Third Trimester | 3T | | Midyear | MY | | Academic Year | AY | | AY 2020‐2021 | AY ’20 ‐ ‘21 | Integration period is one (1) day following the end of classes, including Saturday, but excluding Sunday.\\ \\ The deadline for the submission of grades is not later than seven (7) days after the last day of examination period. During the Midyear term, the submission of grades should not be later than three (3) days after the last day of examination period (approved by Board of Regents at its 1379th Meeting on April 3, 2023).\\ \\ Academic calendars for the following academic year should be finalized and approved by March of every year.\\ \\ == Schedule of Classes == Classes are generally scheduled from Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Depending on the course and program requirements, classes may also be scheduled beyond 5:00 p.m. or on weekends.\\ \\ **Change of Class Schedule**\\ No faculty member shall postpone the holding of his/her classes to any other hour than the officially scheduled time, nor shall he/she meet his/her students for class or consultation purposes in any unscheduled room or place except when expressly permitted to do so by the Dean or Director concerned [Art. 317, University Code, 1961].\\ \\ == Language of Instruction == The UP Language Policy affirms that English shall be maintained as the primary international language in the University. However, the use of Filipino for teaching some undergraduate courses has been strongly encouraged. A student has the option to take a subject in English or in Filipino, unless specified in the curriculum. English shall continue to be used as a non-exclusive medium of instruction for graduate level courses. // // == Classification of Students == A student, whether undergraduate or graduate, is classified as either regular or non-regular.
